About me

Hi, I'm Eva

I'm a student with a passion to design, curate, and craft costumes and wardrobe for TV, film & theatre

I have a particular interest in historical costumes, notably, costumes used in period dramas. I find historical construction methods fascinating as it gives me new insight into design processes, as well as the history behind fashion trends and processes.

So far on my costume design journey, I have designed costumes for student theatre, amateur dramatics, commercials, and short films.

I hope you enjoy my work...

Annie - Lead Costume Designer

As part of my sixth-form college's production of  Annie, I put myself forward for the role of costume supervisor.

It was my responsibility to read and annotate the script and outline costume ideas for the production. When the costume was called for in the script I outlined any key props, practical costume elements (such as pockets, jewellery, or bags to carry props) as well any significant costume changes.

I then researched previous productions of Annie for costume inspiration, this helped me understand how to show the personalities of the characters within the costumes.

I created a costume list, key items to be procured, and continuity sheets with costume notes for the rest of the production team.

This was a valuable learning experience as it has given me practical experience in coordinating a major production with a minimal budget; while working collaboratively under time constraints.

'Cabinets' - Commercial for Isuzu UK & International Motors Group

In December 2022 I was contacted by a local creative agency and was tasked with designing set dressing and costume for a web commercial for Isuzu UK & International Motor's group.

I was briefed by the director to design around, and complement the secured location and talent. I wanted to have the talent be instantly recognisable as a carpenter and joiner, I designed his costume to be casual yet worn in, using a slightly oversized fit shirt with a comfortable fabric as I was aware the talent would be performing laborious actions on camera throughout the day. I chose red as the location was primarily beige to make him stand out on camera.

In addition to this, I had to dress the used workshop to appear appealing on camera as well as safe for talent and crew to move about the space. I used a combination of location-sourced and found props to busy the work surfaces to give them texture and make the space look 'lived-in', adhering to the brief.

I consulted with the DOP and director and discussed the problems of the location as many of the walls of the workshop were beige and bland I would have to add texture and colour to the walls to create interest on camera.

The solution I came up with was using cork boards with technical drawings, mood boards, and fictional lifestyle magazine covers to bring interest and texture to the backgrounds. The boards were also used to cover health and safety signs which tainted the colour palette of the scene, the boards were affixed using velcro tape so as not to damage the location.

Fitting Criteria - Short Film

I was contacted by an alumni student from my sixth form looking for a costume designer for their short film project.

I was scouted for the role of wardrobe supervisor. Based on the treatment, script and mood boards, I created costume concepts for the main cast and background as well as continuity sheets to use over multiple filming days.

Pleased with my pre-production work, I have been hired to work on set for the principal photography of the short film scheduled in mid-January.

Fitting criteria is due for a festival release in Summer 2023.

Characters and Costumes

Joseph -

Lead character Joseph is an older gentleman who represents ideas of a time gone by. I wanted to draw attention to his age by using browns, greys and beige, he stands out from the "smart casual" outfits worn by the rest of the characters.

Joseph - outfit 2

I wanted to show the passage of time with Joseph's second costume. I also wanted to emphasise the change in environment and tone from being very serious and formal to much more relaxed and friendly shown by Joseph removing his jacket and rolling up his sleeves.

Arthur -

A similar age to Joseph, Arthur is an older character, however, he represents adopting progressive ideas and change. I wanted to incorporate this into his costume, his outfit while smart is more similar to that of the younger characters.

Peter -

Peter representing youthful ignorance, is dressed a trendy, modern & tight fitted suit with a t-shirt and loafers. His costume is in direct contrast to the older characters.

Extras-

The extras in the film are representative of young millennial creatives who are full of new ideas and are keen for an opportunity to show them. I have decided to dress them in much more relaxed "business casual" clothes in order to physically show the difference in their approach to advertising compared to the older characters.

Raf-

Raf represents the negativity associated with the new blood and younger generation. To show this I have dressed him in an all monochromatic, more trendy and modern looking suit in order to directly contrast him with the warmer more colourful costumes of Joseph and Peter.
