Sketches and Concepts

Here are some of my sketches, concepts and rough ideas.

Bond Girls

I've always loved the Bond films and in particular, the power and femininity of the 'Bond Girl' and how this is represented through their costumes. I decided to sketch some costume ideas for a bond girl to bring this classic character into the 21st century while maintaining her signature seductive power.

Martini dress

For this dress, I was inspired by James Bonds favorite drink the martini. I wanted to include elements of the drink, in particular the shape of the glass, in my design while ensuring to keep the Bond Girls signature traits of power and seduction alive.

I wanted the dress to have a similar structure to a martini glass with a wide neckline that goes past the arms with a slight curve in it to keep the dress' femininity. I decided that this dress would be made of a black cotton suiting fabric with burgundy mesh accents on the neckline, gloves and garter to give the dress a sense of mystery while maintaining it's sexiness.

Emerald green satin dress with pearl details

For this dress I was inspired by emeralds and pearls and I wanted to create a classic silhouette that emphasised the bond girls features while maintaining her powerful and seductive appearance.

I decided to use green satin fabric with pearl straps and back detail to give the dress class and elegance. I also wanted to give the dress a cowl neck, thigh slit and low cut back to help emphasise the Bond Girls femininity to the audience.

Black dress with mesh pannels

For this dress, I was inspired by the designer Nensi Dojaka and their use of asymmetric silhouettes and interesting fabrics to create a beautiful and seductive costume similar to that of a bond girl.

I wanted this dress to have a classic and timeless look while maintaining a sexy appearance. I decided to use a fitted silhouette and mesh panels to ensure that the shape of the characters body wouldn't be lost but in fact emphasised to the audience.

Black and red mesh blazer and skirt

For this costume I wanted to give the traditional idea of a classic and seductive Bond Girl a modern twist by emphasising the power that Bond Girls typically have in the films both over the plot and Bond himself.

I decided to design a black skirt and blazer with blood red mesh lapels and a panel in the skirt to give the costume power with a more modern twist. I also wanted to give the blazer large shoulder pads to further highlight the power of the Bond Girl as her silohette is physically taking up more space.

Skeleton Dress

I was inspired to create a costume based off Hans Holbein the Youngers The Dance of Death 1538 woodcut. I wanted to create a dress that had Gothic elements (shown through the dark colours and bones) while also being inspired by regency undergarments to give the costume a historic feel.

For this dress I wanted to reference the skeletons in the woodcarving and the Gothic style as a whole in a subtle way so I designed a pair of stays with layers of black mesh covering a set of black metal ribs to give a hidden Gothic element to the costume.

I also wanted to use a very dark colour pallet of black and blood red to help emphasise the Gothic theme. I also wanted to use mesh sleeves, a black lace panel on the bottom of the shift and red lace trimming on the stays shift and gloves to give the costume added detail and dimension.

Regency flower dresses

I have always been inspired by the fashion of the Regency era with it's simple silhouettes and designs often influenced by nature and wanted to emphasise this by designing a series of Regency costumes based off of flowers.

Hydrangea dress

For this dress, I wanted to emphasise the beauty and dainty appearance of the flower. I chose to use muted and soft colours to not only stay true to the flowers original colouring but also ensure that I was focusing on nature as fashion in the Regency era tended to do. I also wanted to add a modern twist to the costume by using green mesh fo the sleeves and gloves which will help give the cotton dress a little more dimension.

Red Rose Dress

For this dress, I wanted to emphasise the dark beauty of the red rose while also adhering to Regency fashion. I decided to use black mesh and blood red silk to show this and the beauty and elegence of the red rose. I also wanted to add a black lace trim to the bottom of the shift and embroidery to the dress itself to give the costume dimension and class.

Pointe shoe dress

I wanted to design a costume based off of pointe shoes as I have always loved their unique shape and elegance and wated to emphasise this in a new and modern way.

I decided that this dress would be made of various shades of muted pink silk to give the costume a soft and flowy feel to match the elegance of a ballerina.

I also decided to add baby pink silk ribbons at the strap to give the dress more dimension and movement when the character would walk adding sophistication and an interesting element to the design.

Futuristic & Subversive Costumes

I have also been inspired by futuristic and subversive styles in fashion and how these can be used in film, TV and media to help immerse the audience in stories and worlds so different to our own.

Subversive style street wear

I wanted to create a costume inspired by the subversive aesthetic combining street wear with unique cut outs and fabric choices to ensure the costume seemed futuristic and very different to current trends. I decided to design a top made of a stretchy ribbed navy cotton with a dusty blue mesh vest over the top with matching finger-less gloves to give the costume a little edge.
